1. The origins of this essay
Since the beginning, people have been wondering about Joo Jaekyung’s past and family and this interest keeps increasing, the more the champion interacts with Kim Dan. Why? It is because Jinx lovers are sensing the tyrant’s transformation.
(chapter 1) Slowly, he is getting tamed and as such he is becoming a social being! Right now, he has become much more considerate towards the physical therapist.
(chapter 25) Note that he is standing in the ring, but he is smiling. And this change can only push the manhwaphiles to question about Joo Jaekyung’s raising and past. His metamorphosis is referring to the famous debate “nature versus nurture” in psychology.
“The expression “nature vs. nurture” describes the question of how much a person’s characteristics are formed by either “nature” or “nurture.” “Nature” means innate biological factors (namely genetics), while “nurture” can refer to upbringing or life experience more generally. […]
A person’s biological nature can affect a person’s experience of the environment. For example, a person with a genetic disposition toward a particular trait, such as aggressiveness, may be more likely to have particular life experiences (including, perhaps, receiving negative reactions from parents or others). Or, a person who grows up with an inclination toward warmth and sociability may seek out and elicit more positive social responses from peers. These life experiences could, in turn, reinforce an individual’s initial tendencies. Nurture or life experience more generally may also modify the effects of nature—for example, by expanding or limiting the extent to which a naturally bright child receives encouragement, access to quality education, and opportunities for achievement.” Quoted from https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/nature-vs-nurture#:~:text=The%20expression%20%E2%80%9Cnature%20vs.,or%20life%20experience%20more%20generally.
This shows that Joo Jaekyung’s environment played a huge role in his mental and emotional development. Because of Kim Dan, it becomes obvious that the boxer has a big heart. In addition, he had no loved one by his side. He has definitely trust and abandonment issues. In other words, he had not opened up his heart to anyone else before. But does it mean that he has always been on his own till his fateful meeting with the doctor? No, I don’t think so. Why? First, he trusts the coaches Park Namwook and Jeong Yosep
(chapter 5) and the doctor Cheolmin.
(chapter 14) He listens to them, hence he calls them all “hyung”. But here is the question. How did he come to meet them and even trust them? Imagine that he is still keeping his distance from other fighters, yet he is the unofficial owner of Black Team. He can determine the salary and the transferring. This displays that his mistrust is not just a matter of time. Consequently, my hypothesis is that someone introduced the hyungs to him. Here, I feel the need to remind my inquisitive readers that I had found many clues in the name Joo Jaekyung [For more read “The bright calamity“] which had triggered many new ideas. One of them was that the protagonist could be in verity the real heir of that chaebol family, because Joo can have the following significations: master/owner/host and helmet/descendants!! I had also voiced the possibility that he might have lost his parents due to a terrible incident (crime). With this, we would have the explanation of the abandonment issues and the absence of motherly affection. If this theory is true, then it means that he would be an orphan. Therefore he needed to have a guardian. Yes… exactly like Kim Dan. He was raised by someone else. And don’t forget that Kim Dan is his fated partner, thereby they share some common denominators. Therefore in my eyes, the only difference would be that the doctor was abandoned by his parents on purpose which would not be the case for the famous MMA-fighter. And now, it is time to reveal my theory concerning Joo Jaekyung’s past. Actually, I had made this discovery much sooner, and even planned to present it in the essay “The bright calamity”. Yet, as the latter had become so long, I decided to postpone it! I was waiting for the right time, until I couldn’t help myself announcing on Twitter the discovery of a clue in episode 5, when @jaekyungxdan wondered about the athlete’s childhood. Thus people got intrigued about my new finding and theory.
2. “I just tried a little something new”
Do you recognize this quote? Joo Jaekyung mentioned it in the car after his match in chapter 5. And now, if you take a closer look at the illustration
, you will identify that two images are from episode 5.
(chapter 5)
For me, it is a very important episode. So what do these panels have in common? The main lead’s cellphone. In fact, the latter exposes a lot about the athlete’s private life.😮 We have the best example from Kim Dan.
(chapter 16)
(chapter 16)
(chapter 16) The minions saw the amount and came to the conclusion that Kim Dan was selling his body.
And now, it is time to study the emperor’s recent calls more closely.
(chapter 05) According to me, the mysterious doctor from episode 13 is Cheolmin hyung. Consequently, I had only one name left: Seo Gichan. Who is this man? Because I had made a connection between the names and personality, I immediately started reading the information about his name. Yes, the website giving significations to Korean names has become my little something. Moreover, observe that Seo Gichan appeared first! For me, the order is exposing the importance of a person in Joo Jaekyung’s life. This explains why Kim Dan was only called 8 times after talking to the faceless man. I have the impression that this man had reassured the young fighter. Since Cheolmin hyung is connected to the club, it is comprehensible why the main lead called Kim Dan 23 times after his conversation. He had dropped the idea of finding a lover through the club!! And now, I would like to outline another relevant detail. When did we see the champion using his cellphone?
(chapter 1)
(chapter 2)
(chapter 19) They are all related to sex and as such prostitution. So when he called the MFC match manager, it is related to his jinx. Hence the champion got upset. I could even include this scene as well.
(chapter 17) The champion paid off the doctor’s debts, thinking that he was freeing him from “prostitution”.
(chapter 18) And guess what? The name “Gi” can signify “prostitute” or “flesh, muscle”.
(chapter 5) A coincidence? I don’t think so. Hence I came to the conclusion that this man is responsible for the athlete’s negative perception of sex. The latter is connected to prostitution. How so? Gi can also mean “man of sixty or seventy“. This means, he is an older man! That’s how I deduced that Seo Gichan has been the champion’s guardian! The negative version of Kim Dan’s halmoni!
(chapter 22) He is the reason why the champion became a fighter, just like Kim Dan became a physical therapist for his grandmother. This explicates why the athlete knew how to talk prettily to an elderly and how to assist the sick grandmother
(chapter 21). Joo Jaekyung is used to this. But there’s more to his name. However, before exposing more about his name and his personality, I would like to examine this panel again.
(chapter 5) When the protagonist is starring at his cellphone, there’s a fighter standing behind him. For me, this image represents a metaphor. There exists a shadow in the athlete’s life. Yet the champion is not detecting the colleague’s presence, too blinded by his frustration and anger. He had never been ignored and as such rejected before!! Nevertheless, we shouldn’t overlook the fact that the main lead had called Seo Gichan and Cheolmin hyung before! This exposes the increasing obsession of the athlete for the main lead. Kim Dan is Joo Jaekyung’s shadow, but when I selected this title, I was naturally thinking of Seo Gichan! He is the one who had been influencing the athlete’s life so far. However, for me, the last image represents the transition. Kim Dan is little by little taking over the old man’s place. Yes, we are actually assisting to the champion’s spiritual and mental emancipation. He’s maturing into a real adult by rediscovering his inner child. Thus on one hand, he is taking care of the doctor and the halmoni, on the other hand, he plays more and more pranks.
(chapter 24)
3. Seo Gichan: the ghost in Joo Jaekyung’s life
How can I be so sure that he’s been acting as the athlete’s guardian? First, Seo can signify “son-in-law” or “husband“, an indication that he is like family to the main lead. Furthermore, his name is related to food: potato, yam (sweet potato) and millet/broomcorn millet. It was, as though the man had been making sure that Joo Jaekyung would eat properly. This would explain why Joo Jaekyung is eating on a regular basis.
(chapter 13)
(chapter 18) As a child, he was encouraged to drink his glass of milk and not to drink these sweet yoghurts.
(chapter 21) They were definitely judged as unhealthy, for they contain a lot of sugar. It is no coincidence that Seo can mean “order, discipline and age”. This man was definitely strict. Hence the main lead never experienced a caress and a warm hug from his guardian.
However, since the elderly man is not wearing the same name than the fighter, this means that they are not directly related. Hence Joo Jaekyung had never tasted a family meal!!
(chapter 22)
(chapter 22) Seo Gichan must have never cooked for the athlete, he simply hired a nutritionist!
(chapter 22) However, I doubt that Seo Gichan is living like the athlete. I am suspecting that he enjoys good meals. Why? It’s because Chan can mean “meal, eat, food, delicacies“!! Moreover, Seo can refer to hungry. Hence I don’t think that he is as slim and fragile as the halmoni, quite the opposite! Why? First, his name Gi can signify “rhinoceros” or “piebald horse“, an indication that he must be robust. Additionally, this ghost is linked to “west”, “dawn” and willow, which reminded me of Park Namwook. The latter is represented by “morning sun, rising, mountain cherry and camphor tree“!! How does the coach look like?
(chapter 7) Quite chubby! Thus we can assume that he resembles to the coach and the emperor is taking after his mentor to a certain extent.
Moreover, we know the halmoni’s face, but we don’t know her name… and it is the opposite for Seo Gichan! This is not random for me. We all read his name, yet we haven’t seen him in person. He has a similar role than the halmoni in the champion’s life.
(chapter 22) Is he actually real?
I have to admit that after reading all the different meanings of Seo Gichan, I came to the following conclusion: he is one of the villains of Jinx! First, Seo means “daybreak, dawn“, while Joo Jaekyung fears the night and is suffering from somniphobia. This contrast could only raise my suspicion. On the other hand, this would explain why he would trust this man and rely on him. At the same time, the faceless man could feign ignorance about the main lead’s suffering.
What caught my attention is that his name always embodies opposite notions. Seo stands for loyalty (oath, vow, swear), for forgiveness and generosity (to forgive, to give, have mercy, to assist, to give, to live), while Seo is also connected to scheme, stratagem, to weed, to dig, to hoe, to die. In addition, Gi can embody plot, to deceive, to cheat, to abandon, relinquish, discard, exile, banish and scuttle! Then Seo can allude to weird, odd, strange, divergent or WISE. This is another contradiction. How is it possible? For me, this mysterious man is a hypocrite, but Joo Jaekyung has not detected it yet. While Seo can signify “perch”, “rest of birds”, “to dwell“, “relax“, Gi can represent “bridle, halter and restrain“! I perceive that the elderly gave Joo Jaekyung a fake home, where the latter was restrained and manipulated. Seo was the willow where the dragon could rest
, the reality was to divert his attention. Under this new aspect, you can grasp my illustration. In addition, Seo can also signify “to narrate, chat, express and relieve”, a sign that he has been manipulating the athlete filling his head with prejudices. Hence Gi can also mean “to ridicule“.
This ghost is definitely selfish and greedy, for his name is connected to the following notions: “wish, want, hope, hungry, oneself, self, her/his/its, sixth in order, numerous, to hoe” (in Australian, it means eat eagerly) and “to store, to compile, to gather”. Due to the words “craft, skill, wise, chess, chess piece, stratagem, plot”, I deduce that he must be very intelligent and even cunning. Nonetheless, I can not be sure 100%, but since Seo can represent villa, office and bureau, I have the impression that he is running the chaebol company in Joo Jaekyung’s name. By becoming a fighter, Joo Jaekyung has not the time to deal with business. Further, the name Chan can represent “to carry on, to inherit“, while it can also mean “to exile, banish and scuttle“. In other words, he took over the young man’s place. Hence Joo Jaekyung lives in a recent and modern penthouse and not in the family villa.
But how did I come to this hypothesis?
Look once again at the illustration on the left side on the bottom. What do these little images (plow, winnow basket, millet, yam) have in common? They are all related to agriculture and farming. Besides, Gi can also signify woodworking chisel, hoe, tool/utensil and finally “headland“. In agriculture, headland is the area at each end of a planted field. Hence I came to the following deduction: Seo Gichan comes from the countryside, from the peasantry. As soon as I made this connection, I couldn’t help myself thinking of Potato
(chapter 23) For me, their path will cross, especially since Potato is a reflection of Kim Dan. The former could view the physical therapist as a source of danger for his idol. But let’s return our attention to my interpretation. Seo Gichan comes from a humble background, but he could raise socially, the exact opposite of the grandmother’s destiny. This is not surprising that Gi can signify “rise, raise and get up“. Hence he was not rich and powerful from the start. So how could he come close to a chaebol heir? It is because he was his guardian. He must have gained the chaebol family’s trust. Thus he could indoctrinate his pupil telling him that poor people are to blame for their misery. In other words, Seo Gichan must have sold himself as a self-made man which would explain why Joo Jaekyung is such a hardworking athlete and he is not living on his wealth. I have the feeling that in reality, he is more like Heo Manwook, the loan shark. He took advantage of the situation. (“Gi”: machine, opportunity”)
Because he is not related to the champion directly, it becomes comprehensible why the penthouse contains no direct reference to Seo Gichan. However, I believe that he did leave a trace there, though it is not obvious. It is the painting:
(chapter 18) In the analysis “The bright calamity”, I had elaborated that this painting was reflecting the protagonist’s name and as such his personality. But we know that Joo Jaekyung has no knowledge about culture:
(chapter 19) For me, the painting reflects not only the champion, but also the mysterious man. Why? His name can also signify “book, divination, lucky, auspicious, oath and libation cup“, hence I included the bowl from episode 9 in the illustration. All these idioms belong to the semantic field of religion and faith, thus we have the church in the picture. And that’s how it dawned on me why Joo Jaekyung came to choose abstinence and is refusing to drink alcohol with his fellows. It is because he is drinking with his “master Seo”, his priest!! Besides, Gi can refer to “base, basic, foundation“. He is the owner of the champion’s past (Gi= to record, note and remember“). Thus he could distort the champion’s past memories and childhood. Under this new light, it occurred to me that Seo Gichan is the cause for the champion’s false belief:
(chapter 18) How so? It is because Seo Gichan must have presented himself as his lucky charm (“Seo: lucky, auspicious, propitious; Chan: libation cup, praise, compliment, brilliant, glorious“). And this leads me to the following observation, Gi 麒 can also mean mythical male unicorn. As soon as I found this, I looked into it and discovered Qilin.

“qilin, Wade-Giles ch’i-lin, in Chinese mythology, the unicorn whose rare appearance often coincides with the imminent birth or death of a sage or illustrious ruler. (The name is a combination of the two characters qi “male,” and lin, “female.”) A qilin has a single horn on its forehead, a yellow belly, a multicoloured back, the body of a deer, and the tail of an ox. Gentle of disposition, it never walks on verdant grass or eats living vegetation.” Quoted from https://www.britannica.com/topic/qilin
This discovery could only reinforce my hypothesis that the protagonist is the real heir, the true ruler, but he has been fooled by this old man. The latter presented himself as a qilin, thus the dragon felt a connection with his spiritual guide. He had the impression, they were similar and as such close. Both are creatures of water (Gi: Yi River), and to fire and as such light (bright, brilliant, summer heat, hot weather). No wonder why the protagonist would trust Seo Gichan so much. However, the reality is that the elderly man stopped Joo Jaekyung from turning into a dragon by keeping him by the coast. Headland has another signification: it is also a narrow piece of land that projects from a coastline into the sea. Under this aspect, my avid readers can grasp why I selected the yellow and blue picture in the illustration.
It is an allusion to the coast and ocean, to fire and to water, but also to border, as Gi can mean “flag, border, breakwater, jetty and boundary“. In my eyes, Seo Gichan is the red flag. But the fake qiling used “cotton wadding, the perch and willow” to stop Joo Jaekyng from flying over the ocean and find his yeouiju! He wanted him to remain an imoogi! [For more, read the essay “Tattooed identity”]
So while Seo Gichan poses as qilin, in reality he is just a rat, mouse and rhinoceros. As you all know, the rat symbolizes betrayal, greed, but intelligence. The mouse inspires no danger, and it is known for its gentle and nurturing nature. No reason to mistrust him. As for the rhinoceros, it is also connected to the positive features:
- strong,
- reliable,
- private,
- protective,
- wisdom,
- loyal
However, in the theater play “Rhinoceros” written by Ionesco, this animal embodies different notions: brutality, intolerance, blindness, indoctrination and dictatorship! Interesting is that Seo Gichan is connected to “gas, vapor and steam” which was used in Doctor Frost as a metaphor for hatred, indoctrination and manipulation as well!
(Doctor Frost, 175) And that’s how I realized another divergence between the halmoni and Seo Gichan. Kim Dan’s grandmother might have played a role in Kim Dan’s suffering, but it was not done on purpose. She had trouble herself, the main culprits were the parents. Moreover, though both (Seo Gichan and the grandmother) wanted the main leads to remain “boys” and “children”, the grandmother was more focused on the past because of her imminent death, while I am quite certain that Seo Gichan is more thinking of the future! He wishes to take over the inheritance, though he must be quite old. In other words, he is not realizing his own immortality. That’s the reason why I believe that he will be the biggest enemy of our beloved couple, for Kim Dan represents a threat to his power. Gi means “afraid, careful, abnormal, unbalanced, lopsided“, hence I am suspecting that he will use tricks to get rid of the physical therapist.
While Seo Gichan is connected to “valuable stone, fine jade, virtuous/refined thoroughbred horse, irregular pearl, delicacies, addicted of/fond of“, I deduce that he is living in luxury and comfort and this thanks to the protagonist. He is living happily, whereas his pupil is still suffering from a trauma. The reason is that he can feign ignorance, for Joo Jaekyung can have everything. Gichan might have suggested “fighting” in order to help the protagonist to overcome his issues, his “violence”, well aware that in reality, he needed a therapy. This “fragile peace” could be maintained, until Kim Dan entered his life. To conclude, the “guardian” had a reason to ignore the champion’s suffering. Hence his life was trapped in the winter: his true nature was dormant like in the painting. The tree is not blooming.
(Chapter 18), for the sun Seo is ruling elsewhere, probably in the villa and the company. If you recall the description of the fighter’s name, the latter can symbolize gem and pearl. So the two characters are both jade and pearls, though Gi is referring to “irregular pearl“. This exposes that this ghost has less value than the true gem.
And because Seo Gichan can symbolize “deceive, cheat, discard, exile, banish“, I could only come to the conclusion that he will use tricks to separate the couple: Randy Booker, Heo Manwook, the green haired uke, probably Hwang Yoon-Gu (though it can be only temporary), the perverted hospital director (if he is not Seo Gichan), and Kim Miseon, like for example an arranged marriage. But the dragon is not alone!! How so? After discovering the Qilin, I searched for mythical Chinese creatures. And this is what I found:
“In ancient Chinese astronomy, the sky ecliptic was divided into four sections. Each of these sections contained seven mansions, and together they formed the 28 Mansions. The 28 Mansions may be considered to be equivalent to the zodiacal constellations in Western astronomy, although they reflect the movement of the Moon through a sidereal month rather than the Sun in a tropical year. This enabled the ancient Chinese to mark the travelling positions of the Sun and the Moon, as well as to determine the time and seasons. Each section of the sky is assigned to a mythological creature, collectively known as the Four Symbols. These creatures are the Azure Dragon of the East, the White Tiger of the West, the Black Tortoise of the North, and the Vermillion Bird of the South. Apart from their astronomical significance, each of the Four Symbols is surrounded by various mythological associations.
The Azure Dragon is the mythological creature in the East, as it is said that when the seven mansions in that area (Horn, Neck, Root, Room, Heart, Tail, and Winnowing Basket) are joined up, they form the shape of a dragon. The Azure Dragon corresponds to the season of spring. […]
The mythological creature in the West is the White Tiger, and its seven mansions are the Legs, Bond, Stomach, Hairy Head, Net, Turtle Beak and Three Stars. The White Tiger corresponds to the season of autumn. The White Tiger’s element is metal, and it was held to be the God of War. […]
In the North, the mythological creature in the Black Tortoise, and its seven mansions are the Dipper, Ox, Girl, Emptiness, Rooftop, Encampment and Wall. The Black Tortoise corresponds to the season of winter. The element of the Black Tortoise is water, and this mythological creature is commonly associated with longevity and wisdom (just as these virtues are traditionally attributed to ordinary tortoises in Chinese mythology).
The mythological creature in the South is the Vermillion Bird, and its seven mansions are the Well, Ghosts, Willow, Star, Extended Net, Wings and Chariot. The Vermillion Bird corresponds to the season of summer. Interestingly, the Vermillion Bird has been considered to be identical to the phoenix. The phoenix is traditionally associated with fire, and this is also the case with the Vermillion Bird. As a mythological creature, the phoenix is considered as a symbol of good luck. Quoted from https://www.ancient-origins.net/myths-legends-asia/four-mythological-symbols-china-001792
Thus I came to associate the following characters to these mythical creatures:
- Azure dragon: Joo Jaekyung
- Vermilion bird: Kim Dan. By living with Joo Jaekyung, the duck is taking over the vermilion red (life) from his lover. This means that for the transformation to be complete, the athlete has to bring his partner to the ocean, to the beach.
- Black Tortoise: Hwang Yoon-Gu (his name can refer to tortoise).
White Tiger: Park Namwook
And now, you are wondering why I didn’t pick up Jeong Yosep as the tiger. It is because the Black tortoise is always accompanied with a snake on its back and I am expecting that Potato and Yosep represent the second couple in Jinx. The coach is rather a discreet person, quite the opposite of Namwook. Besides, the latter considers Team Black as his gym.
(chapter 22) Moreover, the White tiger is the king of terrestrial beings which coincides with the manager’s function. Namwook is the representative of Team Black.
(chapter 7) Thus I believe that together, they will be able to free Joo Jaekyung from his suffering and his mental prison changing his destiny. In reality, the main lead was destined to greatness.
Okay, all this was based on an analysis of the name Seo Gichan, so there is no guarantee that it is the truth. But so far, many of my assumptions were confirmed later. Now, it would be great, if you could give your thoughts after reading this.

1. Desire and sex
Contrary to my previous essays, the purpose of this composition is to present a theory which I developed after receiving help from my follower @becalmandhappy_1111. Yes, without her I wouldn’t have been able to notice another important detail which triggered so many thoughts. It was, as if she had provoked an avalanche which could no longer be stopped. You are probably asking what @becalmandhappy_1111 had finally discovered. It is related to Joo Jaekyung’s call to Kim Dan in episode 19.
(chapter 19) There he expressed his desire to have sex, and the physical therapist should prepare himself. My first thought was to wonder why he felt the sudden need to have sex, because for 10 days, he had neglected him. It can not be related to his jinx and his next match, for the champion would have mentioned the jinx. Besides, Kim Dan would have known about this, yet he was taken off-guard by the sudden request. Thus Kim said this:
(chapter 19) In addition, the expression “I wanna fuck” implies a sudden urge from the athlete. So why would he be craving for Kim Dan, when he neglected the doctor for 10 days. I have to admit that my imagination started running wild… I had a crazy thought which made me laugh. However, this was just based on my creativity and nothing concrete. I hope you are now really curious. Nevertheless, I can not expose this idea yet, because it is strongly connected to the follower’s discovery. Yes, thanks to her, my idea no longer seems absurd. Hence, before revealing it, it is necessary to introduce first my friend’s explanation why the athlete would make the phone call in the first place. One might answer that it is related to his laziness. He didn’t want to waste time loosing up the doctor’s ass. However, observe that this request is connected to preparation. And this is what @becalmandhappy found:
(chapter 15) The doctor had made the following request. Joo Jaekyung should tell him in advance, when he wanted to have sex so that Kim Dan could prepare himself “emotionally”. This means that Joo Jaekyung did follow the doctor’s desire. We could say that he took Kim Dan at his words.😂 However, he changed the meaning a little. Preparing emotionally had turned into preparing his hole! 😂Besides, I would like to remind how the champion had reacted to this request:
(chapter 15) First, he was displeased, pouting like a child. But then he replied this to his counterpart.
(chapter 15) He would judge the physical therapist’s preparation and as such he would view, if such a request was truly necessary. And look now how the athlete reacted, when he penetrated him for the first time in the bathroom.
(chapter 19) He was caught by surprise, for he never expected such a good preparation!
What caught my attention is that the sportsman’s phone call provoked a negative reaction from Kim Dan.
(chapter 19) He was annoyed exactly like the champion in the locker room.
(chapter 15) As you can see, both had a similar reaction, though their facial expressions diverge. While the one is trying to restrain the other to have sex, the other would like to be able to enjoy sex to his heart content. Nevertheless, the manhwalovers shouldn’t overlook that the desire from the physical therapist was linked to the sudden kiss from Joo Jaekyung. The former had been caught by surprise by the athlete’s change of behavior. That’s the other reason why he spoke about emotions, for a kiss is connected to feelings. As you already know, a prostitute never kisses her client in order to protect her/his heart. Thus I realized that the doctor’s request was actually ambiguous. Was he referring to the kiss
(chapter 15) or the sudden sex session in the locker room? Therefore it is not surprising that from that moment on, Joo Jaekyung didn’t try to kiss the physical therapist again.
(chapter 18) However, he prepared the doctor emotionally for this by saying that he needed to have his breakfast. Striking is that the innocent man didn’t protest or even argue that this place wasn’t appropriate for this. He didn’t react, when he was compared to a snack.
(chapter 18) To conclude, the champion had somehow internalized the desire from Kim Dan, yet he had a different interpretation of this wish.
Because we spotted a link between episode 19 and 15, it dawned on me that chapters 14 and 15 (the match) are a reflection of episode 19. Thus I deduce that in episode 20, we should see elements from these episodes. As you can already imagine, I have already developed predictions in my mind.
2. The mirror in Jinx
Like pointed out above, the kiss stands in opposition to prostitution. And this topic was mentioned in the bathroom.
(chapter 19) Here, the main lead was actually denying that the physical therapist was a prostitute. In his eyes, he just looked like one. The Spanish translation is even clearer in that aspect. Thus I deduce that this sex session is important for another reason. In my eyes, Joo Jaekyung is slowly moving on from the idea of prostitution. Now, I would like to introduce a list of all the similarities in the form of a table so that the manhwalovers can recognize the resemblances.
| The match (14-15) | Chapter 19 |
![]() | Both are carrying the black bag and both seem to be in a hurry! Finally, observe that in these two scenes, someone was always leading the way to the doctor, Park Namwook and Joo Jaekyung. |
A phone call asking for a request – Emergency | ![]() |
| The athlete standing in the bathroom in front of a mirror anger ![]() | happy Besides, this time he is looking at his own reflection! |
The idea of reflection – Here, the champion was looking at Kim Dan’s face and even gaze. ![]() | This time, he is using the mirror, but note that he came to this idea, when he saw the mirror and he couldn’t see his lover’s face. ![]() |
![]() | The same fighting spirit, totally focused on his training or in the other case, on his rival |
In both scenes, Joo Jaekyung carried Kim Dan’s leg. ![]() | Striking is that their position is switched, as they are not facing each other. Furthermore, this time he is carrying the doctor entirely. |
A revelation, a new idea triggered by two elements in chapter 14, the plea from the doctor to be more gentle and the words from his chingu And this led to the kiss! | After seeing the mirror and the lover’s blushing from the back , he had this new idea , which is like a revelation |
The desire to know the doctor’s facial expression, hence the champion looked from behind. Striking is that he diminished the doctor’s compliment, for he replied the following: “Tell me something I don’t know”. | Thus I have the impression that in chapter 19, he had the opposite attitude. He couldn’t comprehend the physician’s behavior or facial expression. |
In both scenes, the uke was wearing a cloth belonging to the athlete, a jacket or a sweater.![]() | You can notice thanks to the sleeves and the collar. |
Another common denominator is that the main lead paid attention to the beast. He was observing him. After the match, he was determined to do his best to help Joo Jaekyung. ![]() admiration versus no admiration; his responsibility | Here, he wondered about the champion’s life. He was sensing that the fighter was totally obsessed with his training. (chapter 19) versus no admiration, for he was feeling lonely! This panel even gives the impression that he was somehow missing sex! (chapter 19) The reproach from Kim Dan that Joo Jaekyung was neglecting him. It was, as if he was implying that it was the champion’s responsibility that the latter wouldn’t feel lonely. (chapter 19) (chapter 19) This truly shows that Kim Dan was looking for company. |
Like mentioned above preparation, but more precisely kiss a sign for intimacy ![]() | loosing up the hole – prostitution ![]() |
After reading the comparison, the manhwalovers can detect the strong similarities between these two scenes. Here, I feel the need to remind my avid readers the following rule Mingwa’ s story is based on yin and yang, which is a circle.
Thus we always have a negative and positive reflection. This explicates why the positions of the protagonists were switched (facing each other versus from behind, admiration versus no admiration). This method serves to demonstrate the evolution of the characters. Nonetheless, there is a huge difference between these two scenes. Did you notice it? The absence of Park Namwook!! It was, as if he was inexistent in episode 19. And because I noticed the parallels between these two episodes, one detail caught my attention, the champion’s confession to his hyung.
(chapter 15)
3. Park Namwook and Joo Jaekyung
Now, put yourself in his shoes. He hears from the athlete that he caused so much trouble just before the match, and in reality he had no pain at all. He must have been infuriated.
(chapter 11) Moreover, such a deception could only make him ponder why the champion had acted this way. And if he had no pain in the shoulder, why would he request the presence of the doctor who had to take the express in order to reach Busan? Finally, he must have wondered what the two main leads had done in the locker room for 15 minutes!! Don’t forget that he was standing behind the door.
(chapter 15) In addition, the champion gave his own jacket to the doctor.
(Chapter 15) The coach must have wondered why his friend chose to appear with a t-shirt on the ringm they usually wear a jacket, for it is easier to be removed. Finally, observe that after the match, the physical therapist no longer had it.
So PArk Namwook must have noticed, when the doctor returned the cloth. Finally, in this scene, the champion voiced the wish to have water in order to have a private conversation with the main lead, and shortly after Joo Jaekyung admitted his deception to his friend and mention. Thus the manager could only come to the conclusion that everything was related to Kim Dan. The latter must mean a lot to the protagonist that he shares things and wishes to have some privacy with the cute „Teddy Bear“. To conclude, the revelation of the lie could only make Park Namwook ponder on the reason for his manipulation leading him to notice the changes in his fighter.
All these questions could only lead me to develop the following theory. What if he knows about the special relationship between these two? This would explain why he defended the doctor in episode 16
(Chapter 16) and even asked Joo Jaekyung to go to his home.
(chapter 17), when the champion was annoyed. Besides, I would like the manhwaworms to keep in their mind that Park Namwook is also a former fighter. So he is not dumb. He can also analyze facial expressions and behavior, as he needed this skill for his own matches either. Thus I conclude that if he didn’t detect their relationship before, now he must know it. Furthermore, just because the athlete is hiding his sexual activities from his coach and manager, this doesn’t mean that Park Namwook is totally oblivious. He could simply feign ignorance. In addition, the manager is often portrayed „eyeless“, his gaze is hidden by his glasses, as if he was hiding his true thoughts from the champion.
(Chapter 7) Is it a coincidence? I have my doubts. Moreover, compare it to these two panels:
(chapter 1)
(chapter 5) The author can drew his eyes. When he was talking to the athlete, he was honest.
Naturally, this raises the following question. He could have noticed the athlete’s attraction for the doctor much earlier. If you take into consideration that the protagonist asked for the physical therapist’s phone number himself, and this before suggesting to hire Kim Dan as physical therapist… He was changing his MO, like the coach admitted in the car.
(chapter 5) Moreover, in this very scene, the manager had asked him to explain how he could be in such a good form! And this is what the champion replied.
(chapter 5) Then he voiced his wish to hire the physical therapist right after.
(chapter 5) It becomes clear that the new thing was related to Kim Dan. However, don’t forget that some days had passed between the massage and the match and officially, they had not been in contact. However, the coach had given him the phone number before. While Joo Jaekyung thought, he was very smart
(chapter 5), I have the feeling that the coach could already see through him, especially after hearing the champion’s confession and new wish. The latter represented another change in the fighter’s behavior. So I am sure that Park must have already guessed that something was going on between them. Finally, we need to ask ourselves this. Why would he make such a suggestion to Joo Jaekyung?
(chapter 9) The latter was once again changing his attitude. He would never come to a team dinner, but for Kim Dan, he did it. Moreover, I would like to outline that while he was sitting crossing his arms next to the protagonist, he neither drank nor eat with them. And Park Namwook was facing him. So his conduct could only raise suspicions in the coach. From my point of view, if he didn’t know before episode 15, then after the match with Randy Booker, it is no longer possible. In addition, we still don’t know how the champion paid off the debts. Which account did he use? If he wired the money from Black Teams, then the coach would have noticed it. And such a gesture could only outline that the doctor meant a lot to Joo Jaekyung. The latter has not realized his feelings, for he has never been in love before. But for an outsider, Joo Jaekyung’s sudden change of attitude which is totally visible can only lead to the following conclusion: they are together.
But there is more to it. Since the uke’s name has a meaning, I searched for the signification of Namwook. https://korean-name.com/en/search/%B3%B2%BF%ED/ And this is what I discovered: Sunrise and South! So he is connected to the light. At the same time, it stands for mountain cherry and camphor tree. As you can see, he is connected to nature. For me, it is no coincidence. Why? It is because he is bringing light and nature to the protagonists’ life. Don’t forget that the doctor’s home had no view to the outside.
(chapter 19) It was like a prison. There was no trace of nature in his room, the only view he had to the outdoors were the pictures of the beach, but these would stand on the opposite side of the window. As for Joo Jaekyung, his penthouse resembles more to a hotel room, for he barely spends time at home. I had already predicted that he would act like a matchmaker between them. And all these new observations seem to confirm my prediction.
4. “I wanna f⭐ck”- my theory
And now, it is time to present the crazy thought I had, when I saw this panel:
(chapter 19) I couldn’t help myself thinking of the coaches. They could have incited the athlete to go home, a new version of this scene.
(chapter 5) Imagine their situation. The champion would spend his whole time at the gym from early in the morning to late in the evening.
(chapter 19) They must have been bothered at some point. They wished to take a break too. So they could have mentioned that their partner was complaining at home or the coach could have said that because he neglected his wife, she had enough and filed for divorce. She had blamed him for neglecting her. Park Namwook could have mentioned Jeong Yosep’s divorce and the origin for the divorce. Another possibility is that the manager could have lied that he had an emergency at home, he had to leave him alone.
(chapter 13) And the reflection of the match in episode 19 would actually validate this thesis. Furthermore, in episode 14, the fighter had kissed the protagonist, because he had remembered the doctor’s advice
(chapter 14), an indication that someone must have a similar role in episode 19.
Besides, don’t forget that the champion had lied to his hyung before, so the hyung could do the same. Or he thought that Kim Dan would be happy, if his partner returned much earlier home…To conclude, this idea got reinforced. Moreover, keep in mind how the champion had reacted, when he thought, he had been blocked. He ruined a sandbag!
(chapter 5) So seeing Joo Jaekyung totally obsessed with training, the manager could have thought this either:
(chapter 7) He was overheated from training, he needed some relief. 😂
And now, you are probably thinking that this is totally crazy. But I can only reply this. Joo Jaekyung never had urges before. His sex life was determined by his career, like he explained to the doctor:
8chapter 2) This has nothing to do with desires and urges. In fact, this is more a duty, an obligation. I would even say, sex was for him like work, as his career was on the line. That’s the reason why Joo Jaekyung doesn’t consider himself an animal.
(chapter 2) Under this new light, the manhwalovers can understand why the champion would associate sex to prostitution. Sex is also work for a “whore”. So Joo Jaekyung and the “fuck buddies” have the same mind-set.
I noticed that the athlete actually needs triggers to have sex. He got jealous, when he saw the doctor surrounded by the other members.
(chapter 7) This scene was the trigger to have sex with him. Then in Busan, it was because he had been provoked, and he couldn’t calm down.
(chapter 14) Then in the penthouse, he had asked for a snack, because the doctor had announced that he would try to leave the house as soon as possible.
(chapter 18) In other words, he was somehow rejecting the boxer’s offer to view the penthouse as his new home. He used sex in order to achieve his goal… the latter should stay by his side. He was not uncomfortable with him… quite the opposite, hence he could have a snack on the table.
Moreover, I would like to add that the celebrity has never dated anyone before, so he has no idea how to maintain a relationship. He is a lonely bear who has no family. That’s the reason why I am convinced that Joo Jaekyung must have been triggered to have sex… and this can only be because of his hyungs. Finally, I would like to point out this observation. How was Kim Dan waiting for the champion’s return?
(chapter 19) More or less in the dark, for we don’t see any light. However, after receiving the phone call, what did the doctor do? He went to the bathroom and switched on the light!
(chapter 19) And this coincides with the name of Namwook, “sunrise, dawn”. The colors contrast so much, an indication that the return of Joo Jaekyung was bringing light and warmth into the main lead’s life. And it is time to answer why Joo JAekyung was still wearing his shoes and bag, when he entered the bathroom.
(chapter 19) He must have entered the penthouse and seen no light and probably silence… it was, as if the house was empty. And contrary to the scene in Busan
(chapter 14), there was no one to lead him to the room where Kim Dan was. He couldn’t know where the doctor was in his huge house: the guest room, his bedroom… He must have been looking for him, hence he didn’t take the time to take off the shoes and bag. I have the impression that he must have been worried for one moment… just like the doctor was concerned, when he arrived in Busan. Joo Jaekyung was in a hurry. However, this is how he was received
(chapter 15) He must have been happy, therefore he praised the doctor.
(chapter 19) His technique had improved. Thus he felt a huge urge to have sex with the physical therapist.
(chapter 19) He is discovering the good side of having a home! To conclude, in this episode, the champion was taught to have real desires, to have a life outside work!
4. Predictions
I had mentioned earlier that the connection between episode 14/15 and 19 triggered my imagination so that I could make predictions. Since in the locker room, the champion remembered the hyung’s recommendations, I believe that we should expect foreplay.
(chapter 19) Why? First, the author focused on the champion’s hand in the locker room.
(chapter 14) Secondly, the physician’s phallus is not aroused. So I believe that the champion could decide to masturbate him. In addition, in the image above, his gaze is focused on the penises. Finally, since the author is following the Taoism principle (harmony of the yin and yang), it should be the athlete’s turn to use his hand, since Kim Dan did it, when he loosed up his hole.
(chapter 19) Besides, since the doctor followed his request and did a good preparation, the physical therapist should receive a reward.
(chapter 19) A compliment is not enough. Finally, I would like to add that in the locker room, the athlete never focused on Kim Dan, for he treated him as a substitute for Randy Booker.
(chapter 14) This scene stands in opposition to the mirror scene, where the champion is now aware of his lover.
(chapter 19) He is seeing him for who he is: someone waiting for him at home!!
I hope you will feel the need to leave many comments after reading this theory and these predictions. Moreover, it shows once again that exchanging thoughts with my followers helps me to make new discoveries.

First of all, I was very happy to see my prediction come true. The protagonists kissed each other.
(chapter 14) Thus one might wonder if something in episode 14 caught me by surprise. But yes, despite everything, I made a shocking discovery. But I was not the only one. Both main leads made shocking discoveries. Since I couldn’t finish the essay before the publication of episode 15, I am now including episode 15 as well. But let’s start with the doctor.
1. The physical therapist’s shocking discoveries
First, Kim Dan was shocked, when he saw Joo Jaekyung with a huge cold pack on his shoulder and surrounded by many people.
(chapter 14) Coach Jeong Yosep even looked worried while talking to the athlete. Imagine that the night before, the doctor had met the champion, and he had showed no sign of pain or distress. So this scene must have shaken him deeply to the point that he felt guilty..
(chapter 14) Yes, guilty, because he has a drop of sweat on his face. He is feeling uncomfortable, for he didn’t take the situation seriously. Why? It is because in his eyes, Joo Jaekyung has been acting like a spoiled and immature child until now. Only in that moment, he started worrying very much about the athlete. Park Namwook’s words must have come back to his mind:
“I’ve never seen Jaekyung like this before, doc. He’s really going through it…!” (chapter 14)
However, the moment the sportsman asked the crowd to leave the room, Kim Dan made a new shocking discovery!!
(chapter 14) Joo JAekyung grabbed him with the arm whose shoulder was supposed to be the issue! This means with his action, he exposed the lie. 😂 He could move his shoulder perfectly. That’s the reason why the author added an interrogation point with a exclamation point as Kim Dan‘s reaction which is not visible here. The irony is that no one noticed it and could detect his lie. Imagine that only after the match the athlete confessed the truth to his manager and huyng Park Namwook. (chapter 15) Thus Park Namwook must view the athlete as a spoiled child again. How could he do this? But let’s return our attention to Kim Dan’s first shocking discovery: the deception from the fighter.
Under this new light, it becomes comprehensible that the doctor began questioning the champion about his health issues.
(chapter 14) Notice that he employed the expression “I heard” indicating that he was starting doubting the manager’s words. Maybe there had been a misunderstanding or an exaggeration from Park Namwook. But instead of answering his questions, the fighter replied this: STRIP!! (chapter 14) Once again, this must have deeply surprised Kim Dan. I would even say that such a request must have horrified Kim Dan.
(chapter 14) The manhwalovers can notice that the protagonist’s face became blue with shock! 🥶 This order came like a bolt from the blue! Who on earth would make a doctor travel for 4 hours for just having sex? In his eyes, the champion must have appeared like a crazy, sex obsessed and immature child!! So in this scene, the young doctor’s negative perception about Joo Jaekyung must have reached a new peak. He was acting like an irresponsible and unreasonable person. Therefore the doctor still tried to divert the champion’s attention on something else.
Kim Dan: “But aren’t you… unwell?” (chapter 14)
Maybe he had felt a discomfort before, and had forgotten it. This scene shows that Kim Dan is not taking the champion’s jinx and belief seriously. Then at the end, when he asked the main lead to be more gentle, he never expected to be kissed. Yes, this was another huge discovery.
(chapter 14) That’s the reason why he had his eyes wide open. And naturally, we have to envision that this represented the doctor’s first kiss. This interpretation is confirmed in episode 15. (chapter 15) He has no idea how to kiss, and his notion of kissing is based on prejudices. The sudden change definitely caught the doctor by surprise for two reasons. First how could he become more gentle, after punching the door like that? (chapter 14) Besides, for the first time, the fighter had listened to his plea
(chapter 14) contrary to the past. In my eyes, when Kim Dan was grabbed by the chin
(chapter 14), he thought, Joo Jaekyung would warn him again, like in this scene.
(chapter 12) Because of his unpredictable behavior, the champion must appear in the physical therapist’s eyes as a powerful but uncontrollable teenager. Nevertheless, in episode 15, Kim Dan made another huge discovery:
(chapter 15) By watching the champion’s victory live, he was forced to admit that the man is more than just a spoiled and immature child. HE is above all a celebrity, someone people admire. He is a serious athlete. (chapter 15) In this scene, he is reminding of reality. While many readers thought that Kim Dan was falling in love with Joo Jaekyung due to the heartbeat and his facial expression,
(chapter 15) I come to a different interpretation. Kim Dan is simply realizing that he is standing in front of his idol. There’s no doubt that he has always admired the man, since he watched his fight on his cellphone. Then he idolized his body and his attitude during the training. For me, Kim Dan was reacting like a stan in front of his idol!! That’s the reason why Mingwa drew such a panel.
(chapter 15) For the first time, he was able to watch his fight live… something he could never afford before. Right now, he is standing far away from the ring, but slowly he will move closer and closer to the ring. Yes, this scene moved not only Kim Dan, but also me! Why? It is because I felt that the doctor was slowly moving on from his prejudices about the athlete. He is more than just a childish, sex obsessed and self-centered man. Hence it is not surprising that he thought about his own responsibility.
(chapter 15) This implies that Kim Dan is now taking his job seriously and as such the athlete’s jinx. We could say that as his “stan”, he desires to work properly, as his doctor and sex partner. Under this new approach, it becomes comprehensible, while at the end, the doctor made the following request to Joo Jaekyung:
“It’s just… if you could let me know in advance… I could, um, prepare myself a bit better ? Uh… emotionally… (chapter 15)
Kim Dan has the intention to do his “job” properly, he will act as his stan, he has no intention to get emotionally attached. This means that the young man no longer views himself as a “whore” which is a good thing. But admiration is something different from “love”. A fan might adore a celebrity, but the person always separates his life from his idol’s. Therefore I don’t think that the doctor will fall in love with the athlete first… quite the opposite! These positive emotions represent an obstacle.
2. Joo Jaekyung’s “crazy behavior”
I am sure that many readers felt the same way than the doctor while reading episode 14: Joo Jaekyung appeared as a self-centered and brutal “child”. Who would f…k like that just before a fight? (chapter 14) It was rough to the point that Kim Dan was in pain and even scared. It was, like Joo Jaekyung was fighting against Kim Dan. The sex resembled to a boxing match. But the most terrible aspect is that the athlete’s mind was elsewhere. He was recalling the affront made by the boxer Randy Booker.
(chapter 14) This means that Joo Jaekyung is separating the body from the mind. How? It was, as if he was not sensing his own body. This explicates why he didn’t notice that he was hurting Kim Dan while having sex. For me, the fighter had lost almost all his senses (touch, vision, smell). He was only brought back to reality, when the doctor whispered to his sex partner:
(chapter 14) The weeping sound and his voice reminded him of the doctor’s existence and presence. He was not with Randy Booker, but with a weak creature who could die, if he kept behaving like that. Joo Jaekyung didn’t feel pain or heard the sound, when he punched the door.
(chapter 14) As you can see, only the doctor could bring him back to reality. Hence we could say that the physical therapist had become a surrogate of Randy Booker. That’s the reason why Joo Jaekyung never hugs and embraces his “lovers”. He is fighting in bed, they replace the “fighters. But why was he so upset in the end? For me, it is related to the rival’s words.
(chapter 14) He insulted him by saying that he was a little baby. I believe that this was the worst offense for Joo Jaekyung.
2. 1. Joo Jaekyung: A baby or a man?
For me, there is no doubt that the athlete has a different perception about himself. He views himself as an independent and mature man. Yes… you are reading it correctly. Let’s not forget that he is a successful athlete. He takes care of his health (balanced meals and abstinence), and he makes sure that he lives in a decent house. This is perceptible, when the manhwaphiles pay attention to his behavior towards Kim Dan.
(chapter 9)
(chapter 10) He acts, as if he was the mature one next to the doctor. He gives him advices
(chapter 13) and makes some reproach.
(chapter 11) In episode 15, he even seems to be all-knowing.
“Tell me something I don’t know. “ (chapter 15)
Furthermore, he often listens to his huyng’s advices and opinion. As you can see, he perceives himself as a mature and reasonable man, while for him, Kim Dan seems so irresponsible!! That’s the reason why he could only get infuriated by the insult from Randy Booker. But there is more to it in my opinion.
2. 2. Rejection and admiration
I detected another cause for his outburst. I would say, rejection! He hates not being accepted! This was particularly perceptible in chapter 15. You could sense his sense of satisfaction, when the crowd called his name. (chapter 15) He was smiling.
(chapter 15) He looked happy there. This can only reinforce my interpretation that the athlete was neglected in his childhood. Through his fame, he is compensating the lack of attention in his childhood. This explicates why he looks out for his reputation
(chapter 13) and met “lovers” in club, which is something secretive and private. Therefore the manhwaphiles can comprehend why the athlete is hiding his homosexuality in the end. He fears rejection, a sign of abandonment issues, hence it explicates the origins of his rage and violence. He doesn’t desire to be reminded of his own past. Therefore it is not surprising that he couldn’t forget Randy Booker’s insults (the spit in chapter 14) and retaliated the same way after his victory.
(chapter 15) He seems to live by the principle “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth” (“lex talionis”, law of retaliation).
In addition, I think
the words “little baby” triggered such a strong reaction, for he hates being a child. But why? It is because he has been neglected in his childhood, like mentioned above. He doesn’t want to be seen as a kid. He wants to forget his childhood. It was, as if he was erasing his own youth.
Nonetheless, because the champion was no longer sensing his body and using his senses while having sex, I started researching about the origins about such a behavior. And this is what I discovered: Somatosensory affectionate deprivation, SAD. But what is it exactly?
“During my tenure at the NICHD (1966-1980), I formulated a novel developmental brain-behavioral theory of emotional-social regulation to explain the pathological depression and violence that results from maternal-social deprivation or the social isolation rearing of infant animals. This theory involved the cerebellar-limbic-frontal lobe complex where I proposed that the cerebellum has a major role in the regulation of sensory-limbic (emotional) brain activity which also integrates (or not) this activity with higher brain processes (frontal-temporal cortex). I established a number of basic research programs to evaluate this theory and with other scientists documented that the failure of “mother love” results in developmental brain dysfunction and damage which underlies the depression, stereotypical movement disorders (e.g. rocking behaviors and self-mutilation), hyperreactivity to sensory stimulation, particularly touch with, paradoxically, impaired pain perception; social alienation, rage and pathological violence against other animals that have been commonly described in isolation reared monkeys and in other isolation reared animals. Quoted from http://www.violence.de/prescott/pppj/article.html
“Thus, it was proposed that affection deprivation would be associated with the sensation of physical pain as well as with poor-quality sleep. Three studies involving a total of 1,368 adults from nearly all U.S. states and several foreign countries revealed significant associations between affection deprivation, physical pain, and multiple facets of disturbed sleep.” Quoted from https://www.researchgate.net/publication/305695316_Affection_Deprivation_Is_Associated_With_Physical_Pain_and_Poor_Sleep_Quality
I had already outlined that the athlete wouldn’t sleep much. SAD would also explain why the manager desired his champion to have a physical therapist. Consequently, I assume that the champion grew up in an environment, where he was surrounded by men in my opinion. This explains why he calls Park Namwook and coach Jeong Yosep “hyung”. The absence of women in his world caused him to become rough. He had no feminine role model. And now, you comprehend why episode 14 represented a huge discovery for me. Joo Jaekyung was forced to change his behavior, because Kim Dan symbolizes the “child”… something he actually “hates”. This explicates why he was shocked
(chapter 14) by the tears and the shaking voice from the physical therapist.
(chapter 14) He was reminded of the seriousness of the situation. He couldn’t act like in the past. That’s how he remembered the advices from his chingu doctor. This scene exposes that Joo Jaekyung is relying more and more on the doctor. I would even add, the athlete needs him, because thanks to him, he could feel pleasure. For the first time, he could blush and make unusual facial expressions….
(chapter 12) In other words, he is rediscovering his inner child, something he deeply repressed.
Since I detected the contrast between Kim Dan and Joo Jaekyung, I am quite certain that Kim Dan has a huge advantage over his idol, he was embraced and kissed by his halmoni.
(chapter 5) He learned what love is and how to display affection. He might have not kissed a woman before, but he knows sensuality
(chapter 15), while the other views sex as a struggle. Since I detected the contrast between Kim Dan and Joo Jaekyung, I am quite certain that Joo Jaekyung had no woman close to him.
To sum up, because he was neglected in his childhood, he came to hate being a child. So from my point of view, he learned to become independent and act tough very early on. He internalized to rely on noone, as men are supposed not to cry and show vulnerabilities. Hence being called a “baby” could only represent the biggest insult for the athlete. It is worst than a child. He views himself as a strong, reasonable and responsible man. However, by meeting Kim Dan, he is discovering a new world, the lost childhood, thus he acts like a child (blushing, sometimes immature…). And now, observe how Joo Jaekyung reacted after their first kiss. He got upset, for the latter was not reciprocating the kiss. He felt like he was rejected.
(chapter 15) He still viewed this sex session like a battle, that’s the reason why he observed the partner’s facial reaction.
(chapter 15) He got shocked, when he realized that he could “defeat” the doctor with his kiss.
(chapter 15) He truly enjoyed seeing Kim Dan’s blushing and ecstasy
(chapter 15) As you can see, the doctor was teaching Joo Jaeykung something he didn’t know. The latter can have a good “fuck” (repeating the champion’s expression), if he is able to pleasure his partner too. Pay attention that he came to his climax, shortly after witnessing this face. (chapter 15) The doctor’s reaction aroused him so much that he started thrusting again, but this was really short. As you can see, the fighter discovered the positive aspects of kisses. He felt powerful, for he could still make his “counterpart” surrender to pleasure. For the first time, he was facing his partner. The champion still viewed this sex session as a fight, this explicates why he dropped the doctor right after. (chapter 15) He had defeated his “enemy” that’s the reason why he has always “abandoned” the young man after their intercourses. After this short but intense sex session, the fighter was now in possession of all his senses. He was no longer controlled by his negative emotions, thus he could plan a strategy how to defeat Randy Booker. But is he truly the winner of his “fight” with the doctor?
3. Victory or defeat?
While the athlete won the fight so easily, (chapter 15) I consider the sex session as the champion’s defeat. Why? It is because now they are kissing and facing each other. The distance is slowly diminishing, yet the champion is the only one who looks at Kim Dan which can only make him vulnerable. He called the protagonist a sleeping beauty, so imagine the effect that the man’s aroused and pretty face had on the athlete.
(chapter 15) This can only work like a “charm”. Then the champion learned the following lessons. First, he needs to give pleasure to the physician to achieve his goal, defeat his enemy. Thus he has to become more sensual than before. Secondly the kiss implies the existence of emotions. But Joo Jaekyung is denying them.
(chapter 15) Finally, he is confusing admiration with love. Observe that he looked at Kim Dan after hearing his compliment. (chapter 15) It shows that his words already have a huge signification. Moreover, since the young man blushed, the champion believes that he is getting “loved”.
(chapter 15) However, admiration and love are not the same. Besides, since he bit Kim Dan, this means that he claims him as his “possession”. (chapter 15) This shows that Joo Jaekyung is falling more and more for the doctor, while the other is able to keep his distance from the champion, for he views Joo Jaekyung as his idol and his patient. He is able to differentiate between work and life. Thus he wants to be prepared emotionally. He shouldn’t get too much attached. This is only for the athlete’s sake and his career. However, this is not the same the athlete, for the latter is using his job to compensate his lack of warmth and affection in his childhood. He has long assimilated that admiration and fame are substitution for “love”. The young doctor might feel pleasure, but this doesn’t equal to love and affection. Thus I believe that the first one to fall in love will be the champion, and not Kim Dan. Like pointed above, his admiration and his sense of responsibility create a distance in the end, though it is not visible. Besides, who initiated the first kiss? JOO JAEKYUNG! Finally, he closed his eyes, a sign of trust!

1. The true meaning of this statement
This statement
(chapter 1) represents Kim Dan’s perception about Joo Jaekyung. But what does he mean actually here? First, he is referring to his successful career. The man has not been defeated for a long time. However, this declaration implies as well that the champion is super healthy. It is because strength is a synonym for health and vitality. First, we shouldn’t overlook that Kim Dan is also a physical therapist. Secondly, there is no ambiguity that the doctor thought this as well, because the moment he massaged his client, he kept praising him for his muscles
(chapter 1) and his skin!
(chapter 1) The color and texture of skin and the muscles serve as indicators to detect an illness.
2. The origins of this perception
Hence the halmoni was drawn with wrinkles and a rather pale skin.
(chapter 7) Moreover the biggest proof of her cancer was the huge loss of weight! She was so thin that moving represents a huge hurdle for her. And the moment the manhwalovers compare the champion’s leg
(chapter 1) with the halmoni’s hand
(chapter 7), they can grasp why Kim Dan made such a statement. For him, the athlete could only appear healthy!! His body contrasts so much to his grandma’s! Hence Joo JAekyung could only appear as the strongest man in the world. However, as you can imagine, I believe that the doctor’s judgement is wrong! I came to develop this theory while reading chapter 9. Yes, Joo Jaekyung is not healthy!! For me, he is hiding an illness. 😲
3. Joo Jaekyung’s illness
But how did I come to this conclusion?
Everything started with Park Namwook’s confession.
(chapter 9) He called his famous member a maniac. This idiom caught my attention, thus I started investigating what mania truly is.
“Mania is a psychological condition that causes a person to experience unreasonable euphoria, very intense moods, hyperactivity, and delusions. Mania (or manic episodes) is a common symptom of bipolar disorder.” Quoted from https://www.healthline.com/health/mania
However, mania shouldn’t be judged as a synonym for bipolar disorder. A person suffering from mania is not necessarily suffering from bipolar disorder, because depression and the feeling of emptiness or suicidal thoughts represent the characteristics of Bipolar disorder.
Bipolar disorder, previously called manic depression, is a mental health condition that involves fluctuations in thinking, mood, and behavior. If you have bipolar disorder, you may experience periods of depression or mania. […] Bipolar I involves depression and mania, an extremely high mood. Bipolar II is more likely to involve depression and hypomania. Hypomania is similar to mania but less extreme. Quoted from https://www.healthline.com/health/depression/manic-depression-bipolar-disorder
And Joo Jaekyung acts definitely as a confident sportsman. Furthermore, when Kim Dan ignored him, he didn’t get depressed at all. In fact, he even got upset and angry.
(chapter 5) On the other hand, the protagonist showed huge mood swings, from extreme euphoria to anger or the reverse. But what are the symptoms for mania?
- He or she is easily distracted.
- He or she engages in risky or impulsive behavior. This includes spending sprees, business investments, or risky sexual practices.
- He or she has racing thoughts.
- He or she has a reduced need for sleep.
- He or she has obsessive thoughts. Quoted from https://www.healthline.com/health/mania#Diagnosis
Joo Jaekyung’s behavior definitely shares some similarities to these symptoms. He would engage in sexual activities with strangers (he only had met the doctor once) and at any place, then he wouldn’t sleep much. Imagine that after the sex marathon, he still woke up even before Kim Dan.
(chapter 4) This scene revealed that the top didn’t sleep much. Furthermore, pay attention to his eyes. Mingwa drew him with small dark circles
(chapter 7) and some redness around the eyes.
(chapter 9) As you can see, I am suspecting that Joo Jaekyung is somehow suffering from insomnia. He should sleep much more, especially if he has a fight the next day. Finally, he has already become obsessed with the physical therapist. But what are the causes of mania?
“Environmental changes can trigger mania. Stressful life events, such as the death of a loved one, can contribute to mania. Financial stress, relationships, and illness can also cause manic episodes. Conditions like hypothyroidism can also contribute to manic episodes.” Quoted from https://www.healthline.com/health/mania#Causes
As you can see, mania can have a physical origin! Everything is pointing out that Joo Jaekyung is not healthy. But there exists another evidence for this interpretation.
(chapter 7) Observe that when Kim Dan was praising the sportsman for his talents and as such his strength, one boxer was walking in his direction. The latter was actually injured, but no one had noticed it. The fighter had been dismissing it, thus his injury was not treated properly. Simultaneously, the doctor was criticizing the champion for his personality. So in this single panel, we have an undetected wound and as such illness combined with the champion’s mental health. And now, you comprehend why I could only come to the deduction that Joo Jaekyung was not healthy in the end. But so far, it was blamed on his personality. Finally, observe that the champion is the only one who rejects alcohol!!
(chapter 9) In South Korea, this is very unusual due to History of Korean drinking culture. Alcohol serves to create connections and reinforce relationships. So rejecting to participate in such events indicate avoidance to drink alcohol. The only explanation is that the person has some health issues. Finally, Joo Jaekyung’s reaction to Kim Dan’s drunkenness exposed his true thoughts:
(chapter 9) If he drinks, he wouldn’t be able to control himself. His irritability could come to the surface. And the moment I realized that Joo Jaekyung was sick, I had this thought: What if he has been suffering from the consequences of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)? Let’s not forget that he is a boxer!! And the cauliflower ears are the evidences that he was hurt in the past.
(chapter 1) Finally, he even admitted to the main lead that he received blows to his head
(chapter 8)
4. TBI and its consequences.
I discovered that personality changes after head injury, but the patient is not truly realizing it. Besides, if he gets compared to his past attitude, the latter could react negatively.
“The location of the brain injury can especially change how the person behaves. For example, the orbitofrontal cortex helps control impulsive behavior and plays a role in a person’s empathy. If this area becomes damaged, the person may struggle to empathize with others and might engage in more reckless behavior. To their loved ones, they may seem to have a different personality altogether. In addition, a head injury often affects a patient’s mood and emotions. This can make them seem more depressed, angry, or irritable than usual, causing others to believe that the person has had a personality change. Quoted from https://www.flintrehab.com/personality-changes-after-head-injury/
According the last website, a person suffering from TBI has severe mood swings and is as such emotionally labile. Then they mentioned the flat affect. The latter is a reference to the lack of emotional expressiveness (verbally and physically):
“Family members of TBI patients often report that their loved one seems less engaged or less interested in the rest of the family and in the activities they once enjoyed.” Quoted from https://www.flintrehab.com/personality-changes-after-head-injury/
This would also explain why he is not close to his family right now. At the same time, we would have an explanation, why Joo Jaekyung was often left speechless in front of Kim Dan.
(chapter 3)
(chapter 9)
(chapter 9)
Finally, the website mentioned that a patient with TBI has an aggressive behavior.
(chapter 1)
(chapter 5) Besides, I also found out that insomnia can also be a consequence of TBI. https://neuliferehab.com/insomnia-after-traumatic-brain-injury/
Finally, such an injury can affect the patient’s sexual behavior.
“ABC News posted this interesting story about how brain trauma spurred hypersexuality in two women. Brain trauma more often causes a decrease in libido. However, sometimes it causes an increase in libido, as in the case of Alissa, a 23-year-old who suffered a car accident, and Heather, a 43-year-old who suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-superhuman-mind/201503/brain-trauma-can-cause-compulsive-sexual-desires#:~:text=When%20the%20frontal%20lobe%20is,have%20been%20in%20car%20accidents.
Hence I am suspecting that his jinx could be related to his illness, the effect of TBI, which he is hiding from everyone, because this could put an end to his career. If he has sex before a match, his brain is high functioning, so the risk that he has a problem with coordination or concentration … The power of serotonin. Moreover, there exists a high risk that boxers develop chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), the so-called “punch drunk syndrome”. And now, you would have the explanation why he left the gym without telling his manager and coach what he was doing outside the gym.
(chapter 9) He could have visited the hospital. But he doesn’t necessarily need to be suffering from CTE, one TBI is already enough to have life long consequences, like I pointed out above. Since such an injury affect the person’s personality, this means that they become more violent, reckless and tend to use drugs. Therefore there is a high risk that such a person dies young.
https://www.cdc.gov/traumaticbraininjury/pdf/moderate_to_severe_tbi_lifelong-a.pdf The statistics even display that a person’s life expectancy is 9 years shorter!! Thus it is important for such patients to have a loved one by their side, so that they learn boundaries. So far, Joo Jaekyung was able to control his “aggressive behavior”, as he used boxing to channel his irritability. But note that only 26% could improve their living conditions. But there is another important factor playing in these statistics: WEALTH!
“After inpatient rehabilitation for TBI, the following groups are more likely to die sooner:
Older adults
Men
Unemployed
People who are not married
People with fewer years of education
People with more severe TBI
People with fall-related TBI
This explicates why Joo Jaekyung was able to recover to a certain extent. With his money and fame, he could get not only support.
(chapter 1), but also acceptance. They would close an eye to his “strange and aggressive” behavior due to his special status. Under this new light, his past behavior appears in a different light. He is not the strongest man in the world. His money, his muscles and fame were just masking his true condition, he is in pain. Thus he has such an expression in this image.
(chapter 1) He lost a part of himself in the end. This is the result of his past injuries, but since Joo Jaekyung is moving around and is able to fight, anyone thinks that he has already recovered. But I don’t think that’s the case. Like pointed out above, the consequences of TBI are long lasting. Since Kim Dan knows about his halmoni’s sickness, I am assuming that it is the opposite for Joo Jaekyung. And as his physician, it is his role to discover it, because Joo Jaekyung is no longer close to his family.
That’s the reason why the readers shouldn’t judge the champion based on looks and impressions like the poor Kim Dan.
(chapter 9) Here, he might look handsome, but what about his brain? It got definitely bruised and wounded. His lack of empathy and his projections onto Kim Dan are in my eyes the results of his past injuries as a boxer. Finally, since the halmoni is suffering from cancer, I come to the deduction that the champion’s illness is more mental. This is definitely much harder to discover. And since I am assuming that Joo Jaekyung has a family, but he is not in contact with them, it is up to Kim Dan to recognize the situation. Since he is a man full of empathy, he will be able to understand Joo Jaekyung and have a different attitude than in this scene.

After seeing the illustration, it becomes clear that one topic of this essay is to outline the huge contrast between Kim Dan and Joo Jaekyung’s life.
1. The top and the bottom
While the latter lives at the top of the building
, (chapter 2) the other sleeps in one room apartment in a small house.
(chapter 5)
(chapter 1) This signifies that while the champion is at the top of Korean society, the other is at the bottom. This is no coincidence that their social status is mirrored in their relationship. While the athlete owns an expensive car
(chapter 9), the other uses public transportation.
(chapter 1) As a conclusion, one character embodies wealth, while the other stands for poverty.
2. Pictures and status
Under this new light, the manhwalovers can comprehend why the author created such pictures.
(chapter 1)
(chapter 3)
(chapter 9) Their position was reflecting not only their respective social status, but also the social gap, as they were not standing side by side. Since the champion belongs to the high society, Kim Dan had to look up at the celebrity initially. This was not just a question of height. Striking is that in the first two pictures, the protagonists were facing each other at a certain distance, they had nothing linking them together, indicating that the two main leads were living in two different worlds. However, there was a first change, when Kim Dan
(chapter 2) grabbed the champion’s robe. Striking is that he barely held the cloth, as if he didn’t dare to touch the jacket. He was looking down, a sign of humbleness and resignation. I would even add, his attitude reminded the viewers more of a beggar, pleading for leniency and generosity. This panel truly displayed the power relationship between Kim Dan and Joo Jaekyung. Money was in the center of this couple and this is what brought them together initially! The poor needs the assistance of the rich. On the other hand, this gesture also announced a change. For the first time, Kim Dan was not only interacting with someone belonging to the top, but also was relying on someone else. Yet, this was more prostitution than work in the beginning, until Joo Jaekyung revealed his dependency on Kim Dan through the missed calls and the job offer. That’s the reason why the physical therapist was no longer imploring the champion, but now making requests.
(chapter 6) Hence the main lead was positioned much lower than the doctor first.
Another important aspect is that in this scene,
(chapter 9) the man of the hour was not Joo Jaekyung, but the physician contrary to these two other scenes.
(chapter 1)
(chapter 3) This explicates why during the welcome party, Kim Dan stands on the other side while holding a bowl. The latter resembles a lot to a cup due to the form and color!.
(chapter 9) Kim Dan is now at the top, as all the boxers are looking at him cheering him up.
(chapter 9) It even looks like manager Park Namwook was also recording this event. Striking is that for the first time, both main leads are interacting together in front of others. The drink is supposed to bring Kim Dan closer to the team and as such closer to Joo Jaekyung, which indeed happens afterwards. The latter is forced to enter Kim Dan’s world, and discover a new face of reality.
(chapter 9)
Furthermore, the bowl
(chapter 9) is a metaphor for the future link between the two protagonists. The doctor is there to help the athlete to win competitions, or like I had mentioned before, he is his reward and prize for his long and painful career. I would even add,, they will bond through sport, just like it occurred in the shower room.
(chapter 8) Thus we had the challenge with the cup full of alcohol.
(chapter 9)
3. Two worlds and sport
The irony is that Joo Jaekyung never realized that by provoking the young doctor with this description “delicate”, he pushed the young man to prove his strength. At the end, he won the bet and received the admiration of the members from Black Team.
(chapter 9) This is important, because the doctor has truly earned the respect from Black Team, he is definitely accepted as one of them. Thus from that moment on, neither money nor the contract can have an influence on the relationship between the physician and the fighters. Observe that they keep calling him “doc”, which shows that they respect him not only due to his seniority but also due to his education. He studied hard to become a physical therapist. Hence Oh Daehyung refuses that Kim Dan acts as a servant, it is not his role and place to fetch ice cream for the boxers.
(chapter 9) He is no errand boy. They don’t judge him based on his social class, but on his college degree. As you can see, sport is a place that can bring people from different social classes together. This explicates why we have famous sport events like Olympic games or World cups. Here, people from different countries are competing against each other, but it is the same principle. These events were created to generate friendship and avoid military conflicts. In tournaments, talents matter more than money and social status, though this statement has to be relativized, for “poorer countries” offer less chances to develop talented sportsmen. Hence some athletes decide to change their citizenship. Nevertheless, we can definitely state that sport generates bonds among the different social classes and as such serve to reduce the gap between the top and bottom.
4. The purpose of the contrast
On the other hand, I don’t think that Joo Jaekyung became rich thanks to his successful career, though this is not what Kim Dan is thinking..
(chapter 2) He is only famous in Korea according to the protagonist. Thus, for me, Kim Dan is quite naïve. Why do I come to this deduction? Simply through the contrast! The existence of two worlds indicates that Kim Dan is the “negative” reflection of Joo Jaekyung, though there is no ambiguity that they share some similarities: both take their job seriously, and are really hard-working. The champion never misses his training.
And this leads me to the following observation: Joo Jaekyung might belong to the upper-class, yet he never went to university. Since the doctor worked hard to get a good job, I conclude that it was the opposite for the champion. He was not talented for studies, he was more an athletic person. Now, I would like my avid readers to take a look at this table
| Joo Jaekyung | Kim Dan |
| rich | poor |
| car | No car |
| famous | insignificant |
| Huge penthouse | One-room flat |
| College degree | |
| Only one family member: halmoni | |
| rich neighborhood | poor neighborhood |
Under this new perspective, people can understand why I came to this deduction. Since Kim Dan’s family consists of two members, himself and his grandmother, I am assuming that Joo Jaekyung still has an intact family, but they are not close. We have many evidences for this interpretation. In the athlete’s penthouse, there are no family pictures or items reminding of a loved one contrary to the physician.
(chapter 5) His place feels too empty and clean.
(chapter 6) Secondly, there was no one by his side except his hyung, Park Namwook, when he won his fight.
(chapter 5) Finally, this theory got reinforced, when I saw this panel.
(chapter 9), which contrasts so much to this image.
(chapter 2) However, these two scenes have something in common: “redevelopment!”. The skyscrapers are new buildings. This means that the district got redeveloped. That’s the reason why I believe that Joo Jaekyung’s family must be involved in the construction field or at least in the redevelopment of the city.
I would like to point out that many houses have a red cross on their wall
(chapter 9) This indicates that the buildings were sold to a construction company. That’s the reason why the district looks so deserted and ruined, though there exists opposition visible thanks to the banner. Thus I deduce that this construction company and politicians are pressuring inhabitants to sell their home and this for a cheap price. The problem is that the moment the district is totally empty and gets redeveloped, the price for rent will increase considerably so that people with a low income can no longer live there. And if you are familiar with K-dramas or other manhwas (Under The Green Light for example), you are well aware that construction companies are often linked to Korean mafia! Consequently, I am suspecting that Joo Jaekyung is related to a construction company and as such to the mafia. This would explicate why he can live in the penthouse, why he has tattoos and finally why his family didn’t pay too much attention to his education. Finally, I had already pointed out the absence of a mother in his childhood. Only money and power matter in such a world. Hence this would not be surprising that the athlete has such a terrible mind-set, though I believe that there exist other causes for his aggressiveness and selfishness. Besides, this would explicate why he associates sex to prostitution and sponsoring. And if my theory is correct, this signifies that by meeting Kim Dan, he is forced to face reality, the true origins of his wealth: exploitation and ruthlessness. In the first version, I was even wondering if he is not one of the owners of “Black Team”, as he brought the company card to the restaurant. Chapter 16 proved my suspicion right. Kim Dan was paid in advance from the company „Black Team“, a sign that Joo Jaekyung has a saying about the expenses of the club. On the other hand, he was not always lucky in his career, for his ears are really damaged. That’s the other reason why I am thinking that his fortune is not entirely self-made. At the same time, his encounter with Kim Dan can only bring a change in his life. For the doctor symbolizes integrity, responsibility and selflessness, the champion will come to slowly internalize these values.
This is not surprising that at the end of the contest, Joo Jaekyung is forced to become responsible for Kim Dan’s drunkenness.
. (chapter 9) We could also say that it was his karma, for abandoning him before in the shower. Because the main lead had to bring the doctor home, he discovered a new world which left him speechless.
(chapter 9) He couldn’t even imagine that someone would live there. Thus he got skeptical.
(chapter 9) This discovery can only puzzle him. He gave him so much money, yet he still lives in such a neighborhood. He can only wonder where the money went. It is now only a matter of time, until he gets aware that his salary is spent for someone else! Furthermore, the manhwaphiles should question if the champion is willing to enter such a deserted district. If he does, there is no ambiguity that he will meet the loan sharks. If not, he could decide to bring him home. One thing is sure: this discovery caught the champion’s notice and this can only intrigue the boxer. It’s not random that the moment he became responsible for Kim Dan, he was faced with reality. Responsibility and reality go hand in hand.
To conclude, Kim Dan is the champion’s medicine, he pushes him to witness the other side of the coin!! Money can reinforce social iniquities, so that it is difficult to break free from the vicious circle. Health is also strongly connected to income. It is well known that residents of impoverished communities are at increased risk for mental illness, chronic disease, higher mortality, and lower life expectancy. Just because poor people have no money, this doesn’t signify that they are less worth. Joo Jaekyung can only recognize the importance of health. Only a healthy lover can give him what he needs.

Both are carrying the black bag and both seem to be in a hurry! Finally, observe that in these two scenes, someone was always leading the way to the doctor, Park Namwook and Joo Jaekyung.
Besides, this time he is looking at his own reflection!

which is like a revelation
Striking is that he diminished the doctor’s compliment, for he replied the following: “Tell me something I don’t know”.
Thus I have the impression that in chapter 19, he had the opposite attitude. He couldn’t comprehend the physician’s behavior or facial expression.
You can notice thanks to the sleeves and the collar.
(chapter 19) This truly shows that Kim Dan was looking for company.
